The herd lives on a holding with no other stock and wide hedged boundaries. The Awekoola Anglo Nubian herd is closed except for the occasional purchase of males from high health status herds. We do not show and all our females (except one) are homebred.
The Awekoola Anglo Nubian Herd includes ANs and Upgrades bred for high milk yields with quality udder attachments: as well as superb natures, correct conformations and robust health. All first kidders are expected to reach a peak yield of over 5kg, with over 4% butterfats and achieve over 1000kg by 250 days. Milkers are run through and kidded at 2 – 4 year intervals, with no drop in fertility.
All of the goats in the herd are raised very naturally and ethically with kids remaining on their dams and us taking excess milk, until weaning overnight begins at around 4 weeks. They are weaned for a 36 hour period each month for milk recording to allow us to assess the milkers’ yield and quality, then back to their usual routine. I do not force wean the female kids at any point – they are naturally weaned by their dams – male kids left entire are removed and bottle fed when they can no longer stay safely with the herd.
This way of rearing makes for very strong healthy kids, happy dams and good milkers.
The better the rearing the better the milker!
We use no vaccines or chemicals in the herd, our homeopathic protocols protect them from all major issues from tetanus to clostridial diseases along with keeping them parasite free.
